Cooking in West Wood Remake
The oven is a clock — use it before Jerry becomes one.
The remake HUD puts hunger and thirst on the same urgency tier as stamina. The original West Wood let you ignore food until a badge mattered. The remake does not. Every meal decision affects your sprint bar, your visibility window, and your ability to survive a creature encounter after dark.
The Oven is a Clock
Daylight is for contracts, keys, and a meal you will not be chewing when the creature is outside. Put pizza in, stay in the room, do not wander while the oven runs. The cooking animation takes real time — approximately 45 seconds to 1 minute for a standard pizza — and during that window you are stationary and producing interaction noise. Plan your cooking session during a safehouse rotation, not during a dusk sprint to the store.
What to Carry After the Cook
After cooking, distribute food across your squad based on roles and risk exposure:
- Pizza or quiet bake — default night food, restores moderate hunger
- Coffee — Blood Moon tax. Mandatory when the sky is red. Coffee provides a stamina regeneration boost that becomes critical during the higher-damage creature variant
- Water — fills thirst, especially during heat and summer season. Thirst accelerates stamina drain, so water is effectively a stamina item
- One spare meal — inventory management matters. Never carry more than one backup food item or your hotbar becomes cluttered
Kitchen as an Anchor Job
Assign cooking like radar: one person, one room, lights off, window at the side. Do not cook during a chase. The cook is a stationary role — if Jerry is actively circling your safehouse cluster, the oven timer continues but the risk of interruption is high. Call out cooking status: “pizza in, two minutes” lets your squad know you are anchored and cannot immediately rotate.
Cooking During Different Conditions
Weather and season affect cooking mechanics in documented ways:
Summer and heat — Thirst drains faster during hot weather. Prioritize cooking coffee over pizza during summer season. The stamina regeneration from coffee offsets the accelerated thirst drain from heat.
Winter and cold — Food takes longer to cook in winter conditions according to community reports. Cold food also requires reheating — a pizza that would be ready to eat immediately in summer may need an additional heating cycle during blizzard conditions.
Rain — Rain does not directly affect cooking speed, but reduced visibility makes kitchen navigation riskier. Assign a dedicated cook only when your squad has visual confirmation of safehouse perimeter.
Night Cooking Risks
Cooking at night is fundamentally different from daylight cooking:
- Light discipline — If you must cook at night, use minimal light. A headlamp on the cook only, all other squad members lights off.
- Sound discipline — No eating during cabinet animation. The sound of eating produces noise that Jerry can detect.
- Rotation discipline — One player watches the yard while the other manages the oven. Never cook with the entire squad in the kitchen.
- Exit discipline — Know your exit route from the kitchen before the oven starts. If Jerry approaches during cooking, you must be ready to abandon the food.
Food Items and Hunger Restoration Values
Different food items provide different restoration values:
- Raw food picked up from environment — lower restoration, can be eaten immediately but provides less hunger recovery
- Cooked pizza — moderate to high restoration, requires oven time but significantly more effective than raw alternatives
- Coffee — does not restore hunger but provides stamina regeneration buff lasting several minutes
- Canned goods — variable restoration, some contracts require specific canned items which may not be cookable
When Cooking Goes Wrong
If the oven timer expires and food is not collected, it spoils. Spoiled food still occupies inventory space — a common beginner mistake is forgetting a cooked item and losing inventory capacity to worthless spoiled food. The fix is simple: assign a squad member to check ovens before any rotation.
Cold weather amplifies everything — a pizza in summer is ready to eat, but in a blizzard needs reheating. Community testers recommend checking the oven at least twice during winter sessions rather than assuming the initial cook cycle completed successfully.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Does eating really attract Jerry?
Yes — noise from eating raises suspicion. Eat in a dark interior room.
What is the best food to cook at night?
Pizza is the default night food. Coffee is for Blood Moon.
Does cold weather affect cooking?
Yes — cold food requires reheating in winter conditions.
Can I cook while Jerry is chasing us?
No. Cooking is an anchor job.
What happens if I leave food in the oven too long?
The food spoils and still occupies inventory space.
